Installing IIS 7.5

IIS 7.5 Welcome ImageThis tutorial will guide you on installing IIS 7.5 from the ground up.

Requirements: Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008/2008 R2


Select the operating system you are using to take you to the correct section:

The installation procedure to install IIS 7.5 is slightly different depending on which operating system you are using, so you will need to make sure you follow the correct method below for your operating system.

I am using Windows 7

I am using Windows Server 2008 / 2008 R2


Windows 7

– Navigate to Start\Control Panel\ and open Programs and Features.

– In the list, find Internet Information Services and select it.

We need to install some additional features which will be useful to you later.

– Expand the entry in the tree labelled World Wide Web Services. 

– Select the entry in the tree labelled in bold below and then select the check box next to the feature.


Application Development Features

> CGI      This allows you to use PHP which we will normally enable in a future tutorial.


Installing IIS 7.5 on Windows 7

– Click OK on the Windows Features box.

– IIS will now begin installing on your system which may take a few minutes.

– When it has finished installing the box will disappear and you will be back in the Programs and Features window.

– Continue on to the Check the install section below.


Windows Server 2008 / 2008 R2

– Navigate to Start\Control Panel\Administrative Tools and open Server Manager.

– In the tree menu on the left, select Roles.

– In the main window, find the sub-section Roles Summary (it should be at the top) and click Add Roles.

– On the pop-up window, read the security warnings and then select Next.

– Select Web Server (IIS) from the list of check box options.

– After reading the introduction to IIS, click Next to continue

– From the check boxes, find the Application Development section and select CGI. This will allow us to install PHP later without any modifications.

– Click Next to continue.

– Click Install to begin the installation.

– After installation has finished, click Close.

– Now continue to the Checking the install section below.


Checking the install (on Windows 7 and Server 2008/2008 R2)

We can now check that IIS has installed properly.

– Navigate to Start\Control Panel\Administrative Tools and open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.

If it’s installed properly you’ll be introduced with the IIS Manager window, shown below.

That’s it, IIS 7.5 is now installed and ready to be put into service.
